The Revenant is a 2015 American epic historical survival drama film written and directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, a frontiersman on a fur trapping expedition in the early 1820s who's attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his hunting team. He survives and agrees to guide the expedition's proprietor, John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), to the fort where Glass was stationed before he was mauled. Despite being in pain from his injuries and hallucinations from hunger, hypothermia, and delirium caused by brain damage from lack of blood flow during the attack, he guides them through dangerous terrain to reach safety. The Revenant had been in development since 2000, originally with Inarritu slated to direct before Robert Redford, and later David Yates. The project was delayed due to insufficient financing and casting difficulties. In June 2014, it was announced that Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy joined the cast of the film with Alejandro G. Inarritu directing and producing through his production company, Arca Films, alongside Megan Ellison and David Kanter from Annapurna Pictures. In April 2015, after years of delays due to inclement weather, the film began a limited release in New York City and Los Angeles before expanding wide on January 8, 2016. It received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $375 million worldwide. For his performance, DiCaprio won the Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award and SAG Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, while Inarritu won the Golden Globe Award and BAFTA Award for Best Director. In 1823, fur trapper Hugh Glass sets out on a beaver trapping expedition of the uncharted territory near what is now known as Little Bighorn River (Creek). His partner and brother-in-law, Henry (Domhnall Gleeson), and young son Jim (Miles Bennett Dyson) return to base camp before Glass. From the pelt left in their wake, Glass discovers that Henry betrayed him and profited from his work. Ignoring the pleas of Jim's mother (Kristin Dunst), Glass vengefully tracks down Henry at the base of a cliff and kills him. The next morning, after burying Henry, Glass is badly injured in a bear attack. He encounters a group of Arikara Native Americans who take him to their village on horseback. The village's chief treats his wounds but refuses to humiliate himself by letting the animal-like Glass into his lodge where his wife would go into seclusion out of fear of catching an illness from him. Glass makes his way back to the Arikara village and convinces its chief to let him stay. The chief's son, Hawk (Michael Madsen), treats Glass' wounds and informs him he is en route to Fort Kiowa, which was established by Hugh Glass and his brother-in-law Paul Mallet (Vincent Piazza) in 1823. Glass recovers, then invites Hawk and his wife Neli (Gaby Hoffmann) to join him for a trip back to Fort Kiowa. While hunting a bison cow, they are attacked by a band of Lakota Sioux hunters led by Souakoya (Wes Studi). cfa1e77820
